January 12th – Pro Exp
Today we had our first real meeting with Jason Kurmoo, founder of ‘CrewmembersDirect.co.uk’. CrewmembersDirect.co.uk is currently in the progression stage of becoming a fully functional website. Here, for a small fee, media students can post their work and in return CrewmembersDirect.co.uk will submit them to local and national producers and directors in order to get these students that all important first step into the media industry. Jason briefed us all about what he eventually wants from his company and then continued by giving us individual jobs and tasks. I was paired up with Cormac Kelly to be on the interviewing team. We were in charge of organising an interview with Jason so he could put it on the homepage of his website. He believes that this will allow potential customers to get to know him better, creating a “sense of trust between the customer and the company”.
Later on, Cormac and I decided to hold our own sub-meeting to talk amongst ourselves and exchange ideas of how the filming will go. Upon this, we realised that we will need other members of the team to get involved with the filming because although our interviewing skills were standard for journalism students, we lacked the experience with a camera that was needed. We couldn’t get hold of Jason to arrange another meeting, so we posted on the team Facebook group immediately, asking for help to ensure that our work will be completed.
As for the first day of my professional experience, I think I am going to enjoy it. I like the fact that I can continue with my other work whilst working for Jason because he understands of the pressures we are under from other modules, being a student himself. The way this seems to be working feels like I am more of a freelance worker because I am doing things at my own pace. The one problem I can see happening here is that I might leave it until the last minute. However, I am just going to try and keep on top of my jobs and get things done early.
